Reflecting on My Internship Journey at UUM Management Museum
Assalamualaikum,
As I approach the conclusion of my internship at the UUM Management Museum, I am filled with immense gratitude for the opportunities and invaluable experiences I have gained throughout this journey. My role has primarily centred on supporting the museum's digital operations by managing and maintaining critical systems.
One of my key responsibilities was the installation and configuration of an internal system using the Apache server, implemented via XAMPP. This system served as the backbone for managing the museum's database, a task I accomplished using phpMyAdmin. This hands-on experience allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of database management, system configurations, and the technical aspects of server administration.
In addition to database management, I also had the privilege of working extensively with Omeka, a cutting-edge digital archiving platform. My responsibilities included developing and maintaining a comprehensive digital archive for the museum. This involved structuring data, organising content, and ensuring the archive's accessibility for future use. Through this work, I was able to refine my technical skills and deepen my knowledge of digital archiving, a critical aspect of modern museum management.
This internship has provided me with a solid foundation in server management, database handling, and digital archiving systems. It has been an enriching experience that has not only expanded my technical expertise but also shaped my understanding of how digital tools can enhance cultural preservation and museum operations.
Engaging with Visitors: A Journey of Growth and Learning
Beyond my technical responsibilities, I was privileged to engage with visitors by conducting tours for various university delegations and school groups from Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. These interactions provided a platform for me to practise and refine my English communication skills, enabling me to guide and connect with diverse audiences effectively.
When I initially stepped into this role, I faced the challenge of having limited knowledge about the museum’s content. However, this obstacle quickly became an opportunity for growth. It pushed me to adapt and develop problem-solving skills, allowing me to learn on the go while maintaining the confidence and poise needed to deliver informative and engaging tours.
Each interaction demanded quick thinking and creativity—skills that I had to hone under real-time pressure. As some might say, I had to rely on my "goreng" skills, piecing together the knowledge I gained on the spot to ensure the visitors had an enriching and memorable experience.
This journey has not only improved my public speaking and adaptability but also instilled a deeper sense of responsibility in delivering quality experiences to diverse groups. It has been a transformative part of my internship, helping me build essential skills that extend far beyond the museum setting.
My Experience with the SDG Programme at SMK Bukit Kayu Hitam
During my first rotation with the Perpustakaan Badlishah unit as part of the museum team, I had the opportunity to participate in an SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) programme. This event focused on promoting cultural heritage through traditional games, a treasure hunt, and a history session centred on the Rundingan Baling.
In preparation for the programme, our team made several visits to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Kayu Hitam to ensure all arrangements were in place. These preparations involved setting up activities, organising materials, and coordinating logistics to ensure the event ran smoothly.
On the day of the event, I was assigned to oversee Checkpoint 5 alongside Encik Hardi and Puan Shafizawati. My role required me to manage the activities at the checkpoint, assist participants, and ensure the tasks were carried out effectively.
The experience was both enriching and fulfilling, allowing me to contribute to a programme that highlighted the importance of cultural preservation and historical education. It also provided valuable insights into event coordination and teamwork in a community-oriented setting.
This internship has been a remarkable journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery, both technically and personally. It has equipped me with valuable skills and memories that I will carry forward into my future endeavours.
