Recently, I made a big step in my life — joining my father on his daily commute to Penang for work. It’s a simple story, but one that means a lot to me personally. Riding with my father feels a bit like a rite of passage. I’m still a newbie when it comes to long-distance riding, so having him around gives me a bit of security. Plus, mornings are a lot easier when you’ve got someone familiar by your side.
“Sometimes, a new journey doesn’t start with a giant leap — it starts with a small, steady ride.”
Commuting to Penang wasn’t just about the trip itself, though. It marked the beginning of my role as a Production Operator at Flex in Prai, specifically at their Flex Plant 8 (P8). It's a tough environment, but in a good way — it builds you up, tests your endurance, and teaches you the value of consistency.
Stepping into Flex Prai Plant 8
Flex is a big name in the manufacturing world, known for producing electronic components that power everything from smartphones to medical devices. Flex Plant 8 (P8) in Prai, Penang, is a hub of activity, operating 24/7 to meet global demands.
Landing a role here as a production operator means you’re right on the factory floor, making things happen. The shifts are no joke — 12 hours a day, 4 days a week. But honestly, God gave me the strength to push through. When you work 48 hours just on normal shifts, and sometimes up to 60 hours a week including overtime, you learn a lot about your limits.
Balancing Work and Passion
One thing I decided early on: I wouldn’t push for too much overtime. Yes, extra hours mean extra pay, but life isn’t just about chasing bigger numbers. I’m still deeply committed to my passion for writing. Keeping that balance is important.
"You can clock in the hours for a living, but never clock out on your dreams."
I’ve even started inserting ads on my personal platforms — a small step toward monetising my writing and growing my future income streams. Every little bit counts, and staying connected to my creative side reminds me why I work so hard in the first place.
The Reality of Factory Life
Let’s be real: factory work isn’t glamorous. But it’s honest. It teaches you discipline, resilience, and teamwork. At Flex P8, every product that passes through our hands matters. It's humbling to know that your effort is part of a bigger chain that might end up helping someone across the world.
The factory is meticulously organised — safety briefings, proper equipment handling, and daily performance targets. Everything is about efficiency and quality. Flex’s reputation as a trusted manufacturer depends on how seriously each of us takes our role.
Key skills I’ve picked up so far:
- Attention to detail
- Time management
- Stress tolerance
- Team communication
All of these aren’t just skills for work; they’re skills for life.
Penang: A New Landscape for New Beginnings
Riding into Penang every morning brings a strange sense of excitement. Crossing the Penang bridge, watching the sunrise hit the sea, it’s a small reward for waking up early. Penang’s economy is booming, and you can feel the energy everywhere.
According to Malaysia's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Penang remains one of the top contributors to the country’s export revenue, particularly in electronics and manufacturing. (Source: MITI Malaysia)
Working here means being part of something much bigger than yourself.
Why I’m Grateful
Not everyone gets to ease into a new environment with the help of their father. Having him show me the routes, sharing little tips about Penang traffic, where to stop for coffee — it’s the kind of support you can’t buy.
"Family doesn’t just prepare you for the world; sometimes, they ride beside you on the way there."
It’s not easy balancing a 12-hour shift with a dream of building a career in writing, but nothing truly meaningful ever is. Every day, I remind myself: this is only the beginning.
Final Thoughts: Building a Future, One Shift at a Time
Joining Flex Prai Plant 8 is more than just a job — it’s part of my journey towards stability and self-sufficiency. It keeps me grounded while I continue to pursue my passion projects on the side. Riding with my father, clocking long hours, and squeezing time to write — this is real life, and I’m proud of it.
If you're thinking about juggling a job and passion projects too, my advice is simple:
Stay grounded. Stay consistent. And always make space for your dreams.
