Experience at the Media Archive Station

Picture Classification
The day began with a detailed task at the Media Archive Station, focusing on picture classification. Each image in the collection was thoroughly examined to ensure it met the quality standards required for archival purposes. Priority was given to selecting pictures with the highest clarity, as these would be more visually impactful and suitable for future use. Additionally, great care was taken to identify and remove duplicate images to prevent redundancy in the archive. This meticulous process not only helped maintain the integrity of the collection but also ensured that it was organised and efficient for later retrieval or display.

This step was especially important in laying the groundwork for digitising the archive. It provided a clear structure for categorising and organising images, which would later facilitate easier access for research or promotional purposes.

Picture Scanning
Once the picture classification task was completed, the next responsibility was to scan the selected images into a digital format. Using an Epson scanner, I carefully digitised each photograph, ensuring that no details were lost in the process. The scanning process required precision to maintain the quality and accuracy of the images.

To ensure proper organisation, I created separate folders on the computer for each category. For instance, categories could include events, locations, or individuals, depending on the content of the images. This systematic approach allowed for a well-structured digital archive, making it easier for users to locate specific pictures when needed. By transforming the physical images into digital assets, the archive became more versatile, enabling the library to utilise these resources across various platforms or projects.

Video Trimming and Editing
In addition to working with photographs, I was also tasked with handling archival videos, including older tape recordings that required careful attention due to their age and format. My role involved trimming and editing these videos to create shorter clips suitable for the UUM resources page.

This process began with reviewing the original footage to identify the key moments or highlights that could be used in a concise format. Using editing software, I trimmed unnecessary segments and adjusted the transitions to ensure a seamless viewing experience. The final clips were designed to be engaging and informative while maintaining the historical and archival value of the original footage.

Through this task, I gained practical experience in video editing, as well as an understanding of how archival materials can be repurposed for modern platforms. This process played a crucial role in preserving the legacy of UUM while making it accessible and appealing to a broader audience.

Auditorium Room Management
I was responsible for managing the opening and locking of Auditorium 1 and Auditorium 2 under the guidance of Mr Helmi. This responsibility was crucial for maintaining security and ensuring the facilities were ready for use whenever bookings were made. Each time a booking was confirmed, I coordinated with Mr Helmi to ensure the auditoriums were accessible at the scheduled time and securely locked after the event.

This task required not just punctuality but also attention to detail, as I had to confirm the schedule and ensure that the rooms were prepared in advance. Proper coordination helped maintain the smooth operation of events, whether for lectures, meetings, or other activities.

Auditorium Maintenance
In addition to room management, I assisted in the regular maintenance of both auditoriums to ensure their equipment and facilities remained in excellent working condition. This included:

  • Speaker and Microphone Checks: Regularly testing the audio system to confirm that the speakers and microphones were functioning properly. This step was vital to avoid disruptions during events.
  • Electronic Device Inspections: Examining other essential equipment, such as projectors, control panels, and lighting systems, to ensure they were operational.
  • Identifying Issues: Any issues or faults identified during these checks were reported promptly to the technical team or addressed if they were minor.

These maintenance activities ensured the auditoriums were always event-ready and provided a high-quality experience for users. Working alongside Mr Helmi also gave me valuable insights into facility management and the technical aspects of maintaining sophisticated audio-visual systems.

Participation in the Hari Karnival Muzium as a Committee Member

During my time at the Media Archive Section, I had the opportunity to participate as a committee member in the Hari Karnival Muzium. The event, a lively carnival dedicated to promoting museum activities and engaging the community, spanned three exciting days. My responsibilities were varied, ensuring the smooth operation of the event while supporting my colleagues in their respective activities.

Supporting Activities with Contestants
As part of the committee, one of my roles involved assisting staff during activities with the contestants. This required effective coordination, quick problem-solving, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for all participants. Whether it was managing participant flow, clarifying game rules, or ensuring the event stayed on schedule, I was committed to supporting the team and enhancing the overall experience for everyone involved.

Venue Setup and Preparations
Before the carnival commenced, I played an integral role in setting up the venue. This involved arranging decorations, organising tables and chairs, and ensuring that the space was vibrant and well-prepared for the event. These preparations were vital in creating an inviting and festive atmosphere, aligning with the goals of the Hari Karnival Muzium.

Role as a DJ
My primary role during the carnival was serving as the DJ. This responsibility was both exciting and demanding, as it required managing the event’s background music and announcements. I curated and played songs that matched the event's lively mood, ensuring an engaging and enjoyable ambiance for attendees. Additionally, I made important announcements to guide visitors and participants through the carnival activities, ensuring everyone was informed and entertained throughout the event.

The experience of being a DJ and a committee member taught me valuable skills in event management, teamwork, and adaptability. It was fulfilling to see the positive impact of our efforts on the event's success and the enjoyment of its attendees.
